What used to be a 'once every four years' summer event that I couldn't wait for, has become a confusing mess that provides absolutely nothing to look forward to.
Once upon a time, the Olympics showcased amateur athletes, making extraordinary sacrifices to compete against other 'similarly funded' athletes.
But when you realize that these amateur olympics were being managed by rich, aristocratic, self-serving individuals, it should not surprise us that unfairness began to creep in.
For example, our amateur basketball players had to compete against professional international players. That wasn't fair, so now, what used to be an exciting competition has become an infomercial for basketball brands.
So while I may watch the opening and closing ceremonies, I hold no hope or excitement for this summer's Olympics. Unlike another 'every four year' competition--the World Cup.
No, I am not a soccer fanatic. But I truly look forward to and enjoy the World Cup. There is no doubt what you are watching with the World Cup. The best teams that participating nations choose to put on the field. Period.
And yes, the management is still in the hands of rich, bureaucratic, self-serving [some things just don't change, do they?] but so far, they have not messed with a successful formula.
Oh, wait! Where is the next World Cup going to be held?
